  • Last week in the Facebook group we talked about minimum requirements for self-care. A concept totally swiped from Jennifer Louden’s book The Life Organizer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This book itself is actually a minimum requirement for me. I’m at my best when I’m regularly opening it open, turning to the weekly prompts and dumping my brain out onto the pages of my journal. It helps me tune in to myself, my needs, and my desires. It’s very grounding - an anchor for my day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Other minimum requirements of mine? Daily stretching, leaving the house at least once a week and connecting with others in a deep and meaningful way (shout out to the #infp’s reading this)

  • I can close my eyes and remember the frustration that would boil to the surface as I opened the pantry for the 5th time to stare at the bright blue package of Oreos only to close the door and retrace my steps back to my bedroom.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I tried to shake off the feeling, the clingy obsession, the seductive inner whisper taunting “just one Oreo”.
But I didn’t want one Oreo. I wanted to be “good”. I wanted to eat none. I knew if I ate one I would end up eating them all.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I retraced my steps between my bedroom and the cabinet over and over.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can’t even count how many times this situation has played out. Sometimes for Oreos, sometimes ice cream. Sometimes even for Chips Ahoy, which for the record, I don’t even like.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It wasn’t until I learned about intuitive eating and let myself eat the Oreos sans guilt - even if I ate the whole package - that I was finally able to put an end to the actual insanity of denial.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was scary to let myself “give in”. I didn’t think I would ever stop the vicious binge and deprive cycle. But a tiny voice inside of me said, “what if?”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m so glad I listened to that voice. I’m so thankful I put my trust into the writers of Intuitive Eating. Because the cycle did stop.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Food stopped holding weight over how I felt about myself as a person. It no longer determined my morality.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, for the most part, I can keep Oreos in the house and eat just a couple. Sure, I have days where I binge and eat too many. But when it happens I know *why* and I can amp up self-care practices in the necessary places of my life.

  • I am a Ravenclaw. I’m a learner. I love absorbing new information. It’s why I was a virtual assistant for five years - soaking up all the latest tech and strategies for my clients was thrilling.

It’s also how the little seed of Rare Broad was first planted.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately, it was seeded from my personal pain and stubbornness to get the help I needed. But most stories start that way, don’t they?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I was depressed and anxious. Having panic attacks at least once a week. Unable to get out of bed for days. Thinking some of the worst things imaginable about myself. I was hopeless and deflated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I did what I do best and started learning… about holistic health. About anti-oxidants and meditation benefits and herbal remedies and chakras. How I should be running - bad knees be damned and eating a giant bowl of leafy greens daily if I ever want to see happiness.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I did it all.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And I was still wildly unhappy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because these things are tools to wellness - not a cure for depression.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you are struggling with mental illness I want you to know that you are not weak or broken. It’s okay to need help from a therapist or medication. And that’s true whether you need help for a few months, a few years or the rest of your life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because what matters is that you are taking caring of yourself in the unique way you need to be cared for.

  • Focusing on health and fitness is easy. And we are sold this idea that if we do them right - if we find and follow the magic formula everything will come together for us. We will finally feel happy, lighter and more free.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But health and fitness is just one small piece of the puzzle. And it’s the easy part.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The hard part? Creating a life that fulfills you, one that makes you truly happy. This is the hard part.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because it means taking big scary steps. Leaving comfort zones. Sticking up for ourselves. Drawing boundaries.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It also isn’t something you can do in five days. Or thirty. It’s not even something you can do in a year.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As we grow and expand so does our needs. Seeking happiness can’t be condensed into a week-long process it’s something we must actively work on for the rest of our lives.

And when we can be comfortable with that fact we begin to find ease in change.

Eat this, not that. This is a miracle food, this will basically give you cancer. This is the magic pill you've been looking for, this is the one thing you've been doing wrong all this time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We're constantly bombarded with these messages day in and day out.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even when we carefully curate our feeds to keep them out they seep in through ads or newly "enlightened" friends.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Even after practicing intuitive eating for almost a decade and *knowing better* I still find that these rules have weedled their way into my brain.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That I *shouldn't* be eating chocolate and waffles everyday for breakfast. That I *should* have a vegetable every single night with dinner. That I *shouldn't* be drinking so much caffeine.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But life isn't black and white. It's shades of gray. There is no blanket "you must live this way" advice that truly fits us all.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's when we let go of rigidity of rules, make space for flexibility and allow our own unique needs to guide us that our shoulders can drop, peace can settle in and we can find a way of life that truly works for us.

We live in a world created as a constant voice screaming at you sergeant-style that you will never measure up. It's your job to never, ever listen to that voice.

It's through relearning and fumbling our way through the dark that we become stronger. That we regain an understanding of the importance of this work. That we learn exactly where the line is. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Exactly how strong we are. Exactly what it is we are made up of. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Which is why I don't offer quick and pretty solutions or grandiose tantalizing claims. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I work with those willing to walk through the dark. Those who know they'll have to fall down more times than they care to during the process. Those who are ready to pick them themselves up, dust themselves off and get back into what Brene Brown calls the arena.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It's also why I've created a community for us. A safe place for us to gather and safely share the process with one another. To cheer one another on and help pick each other up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
